Red clover is a low-growing, flowering perennial in the pea family that is native to Asia, Africa and Europe and now naturalized throughout North America. Although the plant cannot survive in full shade, it does tolerate poor soil conditions. In fact, red clover is commonly found thriving in pastures and meadows where it serves as a forage crop for livestock and wildlife.

Red clover is a member of the bean family of plants that is native to Eurasia and now naturalized in North America. This common meadow species is readily identified by its characteristic round flower heads, which contain hundreds of nectar-filled buds.

When dried, red clover tops retain their color and sweetness, which makes them desirable for use in tea blends.

This herb is traditionally used topically to counter the symptoms of various skin conditions, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Aids in relieving herpes, treats infections, infertility, immune boost and internal cleanser.

Pleasant and mildly sweet. Goes well with most other herbs and flowers.

Preparing the Tea

To make red clover tea, start with dried red clover flowers. Use 1-2 teaspoons of dried flowers per cup of hot water. Pour boiling water over the flowers and let steep for 10-15 minutes.

Strain out the flowers before drinking. The tea has a mild, sweet flavor. You can add honey or lemon if desired.

For a stronger brew, use more flowers or steep longer. Cold brewing is another option. Add flowers to cold water and refrigerate overnight.

Recommended Dosages

Typical daily doses of red clover supplements:

  • Tea: 1-3 cups

Hormone Interaction Concerns

Red clover contains plant compounds similar to estrogen. This can affect hormone levels in the body. Women with hormone-sensitive conditions should be careful. These conditions include:

  • Breast cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids

Pregnant women should avoid red clover tea. The effects on pregnancy are not well-studied. Men may experience changes in hormone levels too. This could lead to fertility issues or mood changes.

Medicinal Conflicts

Red clover can interfere with some medications. People taking blood thinners should be extra cautious. Red clover may increase the risk of bleeding.

Other medications that may interact with red clover include:

  • Birth control pills
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Some cancer treatments
  • Drugs that affect liver enzymes

It’s crucial to talk to a doctor before drinking red clover tea if on any medication.
